Pia Pajala

Operatic soprano Pia Pajala is a graduate of the opera programme at Sibelius Academy. She regularly performs opera, lied and sacred music in her native Finland as well as abroad. Ms. Pajala currently receives vocal coaching from Finnish opera singer Kai Valtonen and Stockholm-based Dorothy Irving, and she has also participated in master classes around Europe with Eva Blahová, Julius Best, Junewyn Jones, Ryszard Karczykowski and Dale Fundling, among others. She has studied lied with Colin Hansen, Ilmo Ranta and Pentti Kotiranta.

Pia Pajala’s many operatic roles include Countess Ceprano and Giovanna (Verdi: Rigoletto), Mrs Herring (Britten: Albert Herring), Devil’s Advocate (Ludus Danielis), Fillyjonk (Ilkka Kuusisto: Moomin Opera), Queen (Marko Autio: Adalmina’s Pearl), Mother (Humperdinck: Hansel and Gretel), The Nice Caroline (Sallinen: The King Goes Forth To France), Donna Elvira (Mozart: Don Giovanni) ), First Lady (Mozart: The Magic Flute) and Agatha Sjöroos (Tim Page and Sami Klemola: Lovers of Mankind). She also does chorus work at the Finnish National Opera (Aida 2010 & 2012, Boris Godunov 2011, Don Carlos 2012 & 2014, and Turandot 2013).

Pia Pajala has appeared as a soloist with a number of choirs and orchestras under the baton of Leif Segerstam, Markus Lehtinen, Jani Telaranta, Sauli Huhtala, Sasha Mäkilä, Tomas Hanus, Guntis Kumacev, Glenn Mossop, Mikk Murdvee, Markus Yli-Jokipii, Timo Kotilainen, Anssi Mattila, Sakari Oramo and Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Ms. Pajala has appeared on concert stages in Finland at Kaskinen Music Summer, Naantali Music Festival, Turku Music Festival, Aboa Musica festival of contemporary music, Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, Lapuan Spelit event, Turku Organ Festival, and Kokkola West Coast Opera. In 2012, she was a finalist (4th) in the Toivo Kuula Singing Competition in Alavus, Finland.

As a soloist, Pia Pajala has recorded Jean Sibelius’ scene music with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Leif Segerstam. The recording was released in autumn 2014 by Naxos as part of its series Sibelius Completed. Her earlier recordings include Leevi Madetoja’s choral works as a soloist with the Turku Conservatory Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Markus Yli-Jokipii. She is also featured on a charity album titled “Anna hyvän kasvaa” and a Christmas album made by Puolalanmäki Upper Secondary School music classes.
